Summer is the perfect time to eat lighter meals and sip cooling refreshments. Most people are out enjoying the sun, sometimes for hours in the day. Consciously choosing hydrating foods and drinks to consume will help avoid running the risk of heat exhaustion. Below are a few habits you can adapt this summer to stay healthy and hydrated.
Drink More Water
This is most definitely a given. The best way to stay hydrated during the summer is by drinking water. A high percentage of our body is made of water. We need water more than we need food. Without enough water you can experience issues with your kidneys, energy levels, brain functionality and more. Drink plenty of water everyday, especially if you’re staying active. Make it fun by adding fruits and herbs like apple, lime, cucumber, or mint to your water for flavor.
Eat Out Less
Processed foods will do more harm than help during the scorching summer. Stay away from too much fried and starchy foods, you may start to experience bloating and indigestion.
Avoid Alcohol
I know this may be a tough one, especially if you like to vibe while vacationing or hanging out with friends. However, Alcohol can send you into dehydration quickly. So if you’re going to drink, drink moderately. Also, make sure to have a glass of water after every alcoholic beverage you have.
Eat Water Rich Foods
I would highly suggest eating a mostly plant based diet during the summer. Most fruits and vegetables contain over 85% of water. Watermelon, celery, kiwi, spinach, tomatoes, peaches, apples etc. Preparing summer eats can be a breeze, which brings me to the next tip, meal prep.
Meal Prep
If you decide to eat mostly plant based, meal prepping should be easy. The most work you’ll have to do is chopping up your produce. Stick with salads, fruit bowls and freshly pressed juices. Get a couple of food storage containers and start prepping at the beginning of the week! There are so many salad combinations, so get creative! I even like to make my own salad dressings.
Along with these tips, it would be wise you to dress comfortably during the summer. Loose clothing will provide breathability and help keep you cool. If you are spending most of your day in the sun, make sure to find shade during peak hours which can be between 10am – 4pm. Enjoy your summer! Be cool.
